St. Mary's Reflection: Heather Coyne, St. Mary's Parishioner
In Matthew 25, Jesus very clearly names that how we treat “the least of these” - those who are sick, hungry, naked, lonely, and in prison - is how we treat Jesus. Hebrews 13:3 implores us to “Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them.” When we care for the ones looked down on by society, we are caring for Jesus himself. As part of our justice ministries, we are thrilled to have a partnership with Hope Beyond through parishioner Linda Connelly. With safety being a big concern for many San Franciscans, relationships with incarcerated people help prevent recidivism and create a safer society for us all.

Being a penpal to two incarcerated women in California has been a truly eye-opening and rewarding experience for me. When I first started writing to them, I wasn't sure what to expect. But as our correspondence continued, I could see how much of a positive impact it was having on their walk with Christ.
Through our letters, sent via an app on my phone, I was able to offer them encouragement, support, and guidance in their faith journey. I shared Bible verses, prayers, and reflections on my own experiences with God. And in return, they shared their own struggles, doubts, and triumphs with me.
It was humbling to see how my words could lift their spirits and give them hope in their darkest moments. It challenged me to truly live out my faith and practice what I preached. I became more intentional in praying for them, advocating for them, and supporting them in any way I could.
Our penpal relationship has not only strengthened their faith but also deepened my own. It has reminded me of the importance of showing God's love and grace to others, no matter their circumstances. It has taught me to see beyond labels and stereotypes and to treat each person as a beloved child of God.
I am grateful for the opportunity to be a source of light and hope in their life, and I pray that our ongoing correspondence will continue to bear fruit in both of our lives. Being a penpal to these incarcerated women has truly been a blessing, and I am thankful for the chance to make a positive difference in their walk with faith.
